Calculator inputs, history and sharing

The bill splitter and the budget planner calculate results in your browser. To move the amounts, names and ratios you enter between steps, links use a URL fragment (the part of the address after #). The browser reads it into this tab’s session storage and removes calculator values from the address before advertising and analytics start. Session storage normally ends when you close the tab, although your browser may restore a previous session.

Up to 40 recent completed splits and plans, including their result links, are saved in this browser’s local storage on your device. They remain until replaced by newer results or you clear this site’s browser storage. There is no account to manage this history.

Result links can contain the amounts, names and ratios you entered. Anyone you share a link with can read those values. The split result image is drawn by your browser and can show amounts and names. Save image downloads it to your device; Share passes it to your device’s sharing feature and the destination you choose. Sharing a link or image discloses the information it contains, so check it before sharing.

Information collected automatically

Like most websites, our hosting provider records standard technical information when pages are requested, such as IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time of the request. These logs are used to keep the site secure and working and are kept for a limited period.

The URL fragment is not included in the HTTP request for a page. Older calculator links put values in the query string (the part after ?). Those links still work, but their query values can be included in the initial page request and recorded in hosting or request logs before the browser reads and removes them.

If we use analytics to understand how pages are used, it is configured to measure aggregate visits and interactions, not the numbers you enter into the calculators.

Advertising and cookies

The site may show advertising provided by Google. Google and its partners may use cookies or similar technologies to show ads based on your visits to this and other websites. You can learn how Google uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites and manage personalized advertising at adssettings.google.com.

Where required by law, we ask for your consent before personalized advertising cookies are used, and you can change that choice at any time. You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the calculators keep working without them.

Children

The site is intended for a general adult audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Your choices and rights

You can remove saved calculator history by clearing this site’s data in your browser. Technical logs, including requests for older query-based links, are separate from this history. Depending on where you live, including California and other US states, you may have rights to know about, access, correct or delete personal information and to opt out of certain advertising uses.
