Glossary
Plain definitions for the words used in the budget planner and the guides.
Needs
Costs you would still pay if money were tight: housing, utilities, groceries and getting to work. In the default plan, needs are 50% of take-home pay.
Wants
Spending that can pause: dining out, hobbies, streaming and travel. The default share is 30%.
Savings
Money set aside before it is spent. The default share is 20%, covering an emergency buffer and longer-term savings.
Sinking fund
A monthly slice of a bill you already know is coming once a year, such as a renewal or registration, so the due month does not break the plan.
Premium
The price of an insurance policy for a period, often a year. For a household budget, divide it by 12 and park that amount in needs.
Deductible
The amount you pay yourself before an insurance policy pays. A lower premium can come with a higher deductible, so compare both.
Japanese annual tax filing (確定申告)
Japan’s annual income filing. The fee for a tax accountant or filing software is a yearly bill: divide it by 12 and set it aside. This site does not file returns or refer accountants.
Multiple-quote comparison (一括見積もり)
A comparison that lines up several insurance offers at once. Useful only when deductible and coverage match. This site does not request or forward quotes.
